Visions of the Sacred: Conversations with Bahá’í Artists

Written by Kim MacQueen and published by the Association for Bahá’í Studies in 2024, Visions of the Sacred grew from MacQueen’s doctoral research and conversations with twelve accomplished Bahá’í artists working across visual art, music, architecture, pottery, sculpture, and related fields.

The book explores the relationship between art, spirituality, creativity, and community. Rather than defining a particular style of “Bahá’í art,” MacQueen examines how spiritual beliefs can shape an artist’s way of seeing, creating, and engaging with the world.

A central theme is that art can help us perceive realities that are difficult to express through words. Through metaphor, beauty, creativity, and imagination, art can invite reflection, deepen our awareness, and encourage new ways of seeing ourselves and others.

The artists demonstrate that a shared spiritual foundation can inspire remarkably diverse forms of creative expression. Their work suggests that art is not only a means of personal expression, but can also contribute to community building, social awareness, and the transformation of individuals and society.

At its heart, Visions of the Sacred presents art as a bridge between the visible and invisible, inviting us to discover deeper meaning through the creative process.
